Ward and Smith, P.A. is pleased to announce that Matthew A. Cordell was named Chair-Elect of the Young Lawyers Division ("YLD") of the North Carolina Bar Association ("NCBA") at the 2015 NCBA Annual Meeting in Asheville, NC.
Since its inception in 1954, the YLD has been the service arm of the NCBA. It is the source of many of the NCBA's public service initiatives, and has provided an enthusiastic workforce to carry out the NCBA's service projects. From Law Week to Wills for Heroes to Ask-A-Lawyer Day to the Legal Feeding Frenzy and more, the YLD is recognized in North Carolina and nationally as an exemplary organization. Membership in the YLD of the NCBA is open to all lawyers who are under 36 years of age and all lawyers—regardless of age—who are in their first three years of practice. The YLD currently has more than 6,400 members.
Mr. Cordell joined the YLD in 2007 as a volunteer on the Newsletter Committee. In 2010, he became the Newsletter Committee Chair and served as Editor of The Advocate, the newsletter of the Young Lawyers Division, from 2010 through 2012. He then was named a Division Director in 2013 and was responsible for overseeing the work of several committees and serving in additional leadership and strategic planning roles.
His participation in the YLD also has provided him with several opportunities to offer pro bono services to the community, including the NCBA's Project Grace, Wills for Heroes, and Disaster Legal Services.
Mr. Cordell has been rated by his peers as being "preeminent" in his fields of law, and has been recognized by Business North Carolina's "Legal Elite," North Carolina Super Lawyers "Rising Stars," and the 2012 "Young Lawyer of the Quarter" by the NCBA. He received his J.D. with honors from The University of North Carolina School of Law in 2007.
