Ward and Smith appellate attorney Chris Edwards will present a webinar for the North Carolina Advocates for Justice (NCAJ) titled “Appellate Emergencies: Stays, Writs, and Interlocutory Appeals” on January 21, 2026. Chris is a North Carolina State Bar Board Certified Specialist in Appellate Practice, and a frequent contributor to the NCAJ.
The program will address the procedural challenges that can make or break an appeal, with a focus on time-sensitive and high-stakes situations. Chris will discuss obtaining or opposing stays pending appeal, the strategic use of extraordinary writs such as certiorari, mandamus, and supersedeas, and when an interlocutory appeal may be appropriate. The webinar will also cover the mechanics of emergency filings and strategies for managing client expectations when critical issues arise on appeal.
