North Carolina’s Gift Ban: What Social Welfare Organizations and Event Sponsors Need to Know
May 19, 2026
Cody began teaching this semester, with classes running through May 6. He is teaching two courses—Criminal Law and Procedure and Elder Law—both designed to give students practical insight into legal issues they are likely to encounter in professional practice.
The Criminal Law and Procedure course introduces the core principles of substantive criminal law and the procedural rights of the accused. The curriculum covers the elements of North Carolina crimes, available defenses, constitutional considerations, and the stages of the criminal process from pretrial through trial. By the end of the term, students will be able to explain the elements of specific offenses and assist attorneys in preparing criminal cases.
The Elder Law course provides an overview of legal issues particularly relevant to older individuals. Topics include health care decision-making, living wills, powers of attorney, financial and estate planning, government benefits, housing matters, elder abuse, and ethical considerations. Upon completion of the course, students will be equipped to assist attorneys in addressing legal issues affecting elderly clients.
As Litigation Paralegal Supervisor, Cody plays a key leadership role within the firm’s Litigation practice, overseeing the paralegal team while supporting attorneys on complex matters involving discovery, trial preparation, and case management.
“Cody’s decision to teach while maintaining his full-time role at the firm speaks volumes about his dedication to the profession,” said Lynwood Evans, practice group leader for Ward and Smith’s Litigation practice. “He brings real-world litigation experience into the classroom, giving students a practical foundation that will serve them well as they enter the legal field.”
Cody’s adjunct appointment reflects Ward and Smith’s ongoing commitment to legal education and professional development throughout southeastern North Carolina. The firm further supports this commitment through its Staff Internship Program, which partners with local community colleges to provide students with hands-on, real-world experience across a variety of professional services roles, helping them build practical skills while exploring careers in the legal industry.
