Bobby O. Hanig
Senior Government Relations Advisor
Bobby spent nearly a decade advocating for the people, businesses and natural resources of northeastern North Carolina. As Senior Advisor for Government Relations at Ward and Smith, he now brings that same commitment to clients across the state. He advises on state legislation, appropriations strategy, and regulatory matters, drawing on his firsthand experience with the legislative process, county government, and small business ownership.
Bobby served in the North Carolina General Assembly from 2019 through 2026, first in the House of Representatives and later in the Senate. His work focused on issues with direct local impact, including education funding, school construction, coastal waterways, marine ecosystems, and emergency management.
In the House, Bobby chaired the Marine Resources and Aqua Culture Committee and the Local Government Committee. He also served as Deputy Majority Whip following his first term.
In the Senate, Bobby chaired the Appropriations Committee on General Government and Information Technology and the State and Local Government Committee. He also served on the Agriculture, Energy, and Environment; Education/Higher Education; Regulatory Reform; and Transportation committees. His joint legislative assignments included the Joint Legislative Oversight Committee on Emergency Management, the Joint Legislative Oversight Committee on Justice and Public Safety, and the Joint Commission on Environmental Review.
Before his legislative service, Bobby was elected to the Currituck County Board of Commissioners in 2016, where fellow commissioners selected him as chair.
Before entering public office, Bobby served for four years as chairman of the Northeast Workforce Development Board and as vice chairman of the Currituck Chamber of Commerce. He also served on the executive board of Trillium Health Resources.
An Army veteran and longtime Currituck County resident, Bobby has also built and operated businesses along the Outer Banks. He founded a pool services company and a coastal property management firm that grew to serve approximately 400 Outer Banks properties. That background gives him practical insight into how state and local policy affects small businesses, property owners, and coastal communities.
