Attorneys, Paralegals Step Up to Make a Difference: Ward And Smith's 2022 Pro Bono Report

At Ward and Smith, we are committed to providing high-quality legal services not only for our clients, but also to those in our communities needing pro bono legal assistance.

Our firm's pro bono efforts in 2022 reflect that commitment.

2022 was another great year for Ward and Smith's pro bono program.  Our attorneys and paralegals tackled a wide variety of pro bono matters, including issues involving intellectual property, landlord-tenant, family law, appellate law, creditors' rights, and business law.  Our numbers illustrate our impressive efforts:

  • 30 Ward and Smith attorneys provided nearly 530 hours of pro bono services and 279 hours of activities that improved the legal system;
  • 3 attorneys will be inducted into the 2022 NC Pro Bono Honor Society for contributing over 50 hours of time to pro bono services; and
  • 18 paralegals contributed over 77 hours of pro bono services and nearly 23 hours of activities that improved the legal system.

"We are incredibly proud of our team's commitment to pro bono service last year," remarked Mary Cavanagh, Ward and Smith's Pro Bono Committee Chair. "Our attorneys take seriously our obligation as members of the Bar to offer our legal services at no cost to those in our communities who need it most. And we are equally proud of our paralegals who provide invaluable assistance."

The Ward and Smith attorneys who will be inducted into the 2022 NC Pro Bono Honor Society are litigation attorneys Mary Cavanagh and Jordan Spanner and creditors' rights attorney Paul Fanning.  This will be Mary's third year to achieve this honor and Paul's second year.
