Meet the 2018 Summer Associate: Justin Hill

Back in April, Ward and Smith announced a major significant in our Summer Associate Program with the hiring of 1L law student Justin Hill.

Justin is working alongside three second-year law students for our six-week program designed to give them realistic experiences in the legal profession.

In our Meet the Summer Associate series, Justin explains what he is most excited to learn during his time here at Ward and Smith.

Why do you want to be an attorney?

I want to be an attorney because I believe that practicing law is an opportunity to serve others on a larger scale than I could reach as an individual. I have always been interested in serving those in need and giving back to my community and being an attorney can directly correlate to these interests.

What are you most excited about learning during your time here at Ward and Smith?

I am most excited to meet the attorneys of Ward and Smith and continue to develop relationships with them. After meeting so many people at the New Bern retreat, I saw how genuine and close the firm is, and I want to continue fostering the relationships I started that weekend and building more with those I did not have the chance to meet.

What do you like to do in your downtime when you're not studying?

In my downtime I like to stay active. I played intramural basketball and football this year, and my teams brought home the league championship in both sports.

What's the best advice someone has given you?

The best advice I have received was when my dad told me to chase my goals courageously and never let someone else place their limitations on me. Without those two pieces of advice I would not have the determination it takes to go through law school.

Describe yourself in three words.

The three words I would use to describe myself are personable, outgoing, and determined.

What's the one thing that most people wouldn't be able to guess just by looking at you?

I played Division I football at Davidson College.

What is your favorite movie?

My favorite movie is "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby."

What is your favorite book?

My favorite book that I read recently is "The Street Lawyer" by John Grisham.

If you knew you could try anything and not fail, what dream would you pursue?

I would play in the NBA. It would be awesome to travel the country while competing against other great athletes on a regular basis.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?

I just learned to cook when I moved to Raleigh for law school.

Ward and Smith’s 2018 Summer Associate Program ends June 22.
